Summer Trends to Watch for in 2021
Summer 2021 is approaching fast and I'm so excited to see all the trends coming into play this year. In this article, we're diving into what fashion pieces are making their way into the spotlight.
Wide-Leg Jeans
Wide-leg jeans have made a huge comeback in the past few months. Wide leg jeans became popular in the 1990s and continued to the mid-2000s. This style was made popular by hip-hop musicians and was initially worn by young people who wanted to show them rebelling from mainstream society. Recently, baggy jeans have been making a comeback due to influence from Tiktok and celebrities like Hailey Bieber bringing them back into the spotlight. I believe wide-leg jeans will be a popular go-to clothing piece for chilly summer days. Most wide-leg jeans will probably have rips in them on warmer days. Most likely they will be styled with a tank top and possibly a zip-up hoodie for extra warmth on rainy days. This style will probably continue into winter 2021 and be paired with booties and a longline coat.
Corset Tops
The corset was invented in the 1500s and worn throughout the 19th century. As of late, the fashion industry has mimicked the look of the original corsets and made them more of a mainstream fashion staple. There are a lot of current styles of corset tops, some including the lacing used in the original design of a corset and newer ones using clasps in the front or back. Most of the current corsets you see featured on sites such as SheIn do not feature the boning and structure of the original corset design. However, there are many tops in stores that feature boning detail but not to the extent used in the 19th century. Recently, these bustier and corset tops have slowly started to become the center of attention in everyday fashion. This summer it’s incredibly likely these will grow more in popularity, and most of the corset tops we see will be floral and semi see-through. On colder days and continuing into fall 2021 we will most likely see these bustier and corset tops be layered on top of short or long sleeve shirts.
Halter Tops
Halter tops were first seen on long even gowns in the 1930s and got their design from high-necked Asian clothing. This trend can be seen on clothing and bathing suits, which is a nice switch up from a regular triangle bathing suit. However, I believe that a certain type of halter top will become very popular this summer. This halter top appears in a wrap-like design around the neck and another style in a flowy, backless option. There are many different styles of halter tops and I think a lot of people will be playing around with the variability available to them. My favorite way to see halter tops being worn is with high-waisted shorts or leather paints. You can make halter tops look good for the day or night!
Bermuda Shorts
The bermuda shorts trend started when American tourists brought the trend to America after visiting and seeing locals in Bermuda wearing them in the 1920s. Bermuda shorts are making their way back very quickly! Popular influencer Emma Chamberlain and model Emily Ratajowski have been seen wearing these amazing alternatives to short-shorts. Chamberlain even raved about them in a recent video where she shared what she will be wearing around this summer. I believe this trend will be a staple in summer 2021 because of the similar look to baggy jeans. In a way, these shorts are a cut-off version of the wide-leg jeans and create a similar look for those who want a cooler alternative on warmer days.
Mini Skirts
Mini skirts became popular in the 1960s and made a comeback in the 1990s with celebrities like Paris Hilton showing the short style in paparazzi pictures and red carpet outings. However, I don’t think we will see any popularizing of the denim miniskirt but actually see an increase in satin, pleated, or tennis mini skirts. Satin mini skirts look beautiful in outdoor settings and will be worn with long-sleeved tops or cropped sweaters. With pleated mini-skirts, we can expect to see a similar style with long-sleeved tops but also short-sleeved shirts tucked into the skirt. Tennis skirts are just an all-around fave for me and are very comfortable and lightweight. If you’re athletic (or not) this is a great go-to that can make any outfit super comfortable.
Rectangle Sunglasses
Rectangle sunglasses are quite possibly my favorite trend that will be in style for 2021. Rectangle sunglasses are a simple accessory that provides ultimate completion to any and every outfit. My favorite combo is a low, slicked-back bun with black acrylic frames. Gold jewelry is a great match with any rectangle sunglasses but is paired beautifully with green sunnies. You can find these sunglasses almost anywhere ranging from $3 to $16 in many online clothing stores.
