3 Psychological Thrillers That Will Not Disappoint
Psychological thrillers have recently been my guilty pleasure. Anytime my boyfriend and I want to watch a movie, this genre is our automatic pick. There are plenty of psychological thrillers on streaming services like Netflix and Hulu, but I’ve picked out three must watch movies on the extensive list of all psychological thrillers. I will go ahead and put a spoiler alert on this article, however, I will only be describing the plot of the movie and some of my thoughts and opinions. I try not to ruin the movie for anyone who wants to watch, however, if you are really interested in watching these movies then stop reading this article and go watch them now! You can always come back and read my thoughts later on. Enjoy!
Shutter Island
This is my boyfriend’s favorite movie and he has been begging me to sit down and watch the movie with him ever since he saw it a few months ago. We finally got a chance to watch it and I couldn’t be more pleased with the movie itself. Shutter Island is about a US Marshal named Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his new partner Chuck Aule (Mark Ruffalo) going to Shutter Island, a place for the criminally insane, to investigate the disappearance of one of the patients at the hospital. However, as the investigation goes further more and more weird happenings occur such as troubled conversations with Ward-C patients and conspiracy theories galore. This movie has a fantastic cast and a great story to tell. Every time you watch this movie you can find something different that you didn’t notice before. I think I’m drawn to this movie because of the lore and backstory throughout and the changing narrative that is flooded through the movie. It is important within all of these movies that you pay attention to even the smallest of details. If you haven’t made your way into the psychological thriller realm, I highly recommend starting with this one.
The Game
Personally, this is my favorite of the three, but I may be biased since the same director that directed this movie also directed the movie Seven (which is one of the most iconic movies of all time, so go watch that first if you haven’t). The Game is about a wealthy banker named Nicholas Van Orten (Michael Douglas) who keeps to himself in his huge mansion. His brother, Conrad (Sean Penn), brings him a gift on his birthday to try a personalized, real-life game made by the company CRS. At first, Nick isn’t impressed by the gift and blows it off, however, soon the game intrigues him to the point where he has to try it out. This game suddenly goes awry and Nick doesn’t know who he can trust anymore. This movie threw me for a loop consistently over the span of two hours and fifteen minutes. I found that the movie can be long, confusing, and seem pointless at times but staying until the end and finishing the movie out is well worth it all. Again, the cast is fantastic and the movie is directed fantastically. This movie has everything I love: action, romance, and backstory. You can’t ask for much more.
Fractured
I found this movie while I was searching trailers on YouTube and decided to give it a watch and see what happened. I was not disappointed. Fractured is about Ray Monroe (Sam Worthington), his wife Joanne Monroe (Lily Rabe), and their daughter Peri Monroe (Lucy Capri) as they are on their way to Minneapolis. There is an accident that occurs at a pit stop where Peri is injured and is taken to the hospital by her father and mother. Suddenly, both Joanne and Peri disappear from the hospital leaving Ray to question the happenings at the hospital and where they’ve taken his wife and daughter. This movie is not only well-scripted and directed, but also tugs your heart-strings a bit without being too emotional. However, this movie does hold an eerie and suspicious undertone throughout and toward the end of the movie. It will leave you questioning the entire movie and you’ll want to watch it again for anything you may have missed initially.
If you know of any psychological thrillers that you think are great, I would be happy to hear your suggestions! I am always searching for new shows and movies to add to my extensive list.
